Life in Bedford

Proud to be a borough of diverse cultures, Bedford is united by a shared sense of community and has a rich heritage enjoyed by residents and visitors.

Bedford sits at the heart of the Oxford to Cambridge Arc (the UK’s Super Region) and has excellent transport connections to the national rail network (40 minutes from London) and to the national motorway network via the M1 and A1.

As a historic market town, independent business has always been key to life in Bedford. You can still visit our weekly markets in Kempston and Bedford for an eclectic mix of global cuisine, fabric, clothing, and wares. You could also visit our Corn Exchange (although you’ll be more likely to find great music or comedy than grains!), take in one of the exhibitions at the Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, or see a show at one of our independent theatres.

Bedford also offers plenty of opportunities to really engage with your local community. Events like the Bedford River or Kite Festivals allow you to make the most of our open spaces alongside your friends and neighbors. Need a break? Take a walk through one of our many parks or gardens, and make sure you don’t miss the outstanding floral displays on the River Great Ouse embankment.
